Old Fashioned Apple Pie
My husband and I recently took a trip to South Haven, Michigan. While exploring the area, we found Crane’s Apple Orchard in Fenville. There was also a bakery, a restaurant and a winery to enjoy. We picked 30 pounds of apples, Gala and Golden Sunrise, to bring home. These delicious apples made an incredible pie. Using a premade crust made it simple to put together. Here’s my recipe for Old Fashioned Apple Pie, can’t you just smell the apples and cinnamon?
What do you do when you pick 30 pounds of apples? Well, you make pie(s), of course! And dumplings, apple bars and applesauce, too. Ha! This recipe for Old Fashioned Apple Pie is delicious and comes together so easily. You don’t have to be a master pie crust maker when Pillsbury can do it for you.
Old Fashioned Apple Pie Recipe
What’s needed?
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 brown sugar, packed
- 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 6 1/2 cups apples, peeled and sliced ( About 5 large apples, I used Gala apples.)
- Juice of 1/2 of a fresh lemon
- 2 Pillsbury pie crusts
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 large egg white, beaten
- 1 tablespoon sugar
How to make Old Fashioned Apple Pie?
- Place your sliced apples in a large bowl and pour lemon juice over the apples. Add sugar, brown sugar, flour, and cinnamon to the apples and toss to coat. Unroll one refrigerated crust and place it in the bottom of a 9″ pie plate. Press along bottom and sides of the dish. Pour the apples into the pie crust and dot with butter.
- Unroll the top crust and place it over the apple filling. Crimp the edges to seal and make small slits in the top crust.
- Beat the egg white until it is foamy, brush over the top crust and then sprinkle with sugar. Cover the edges of the pie with foil or a pie ring. Bake the pie at 375 degrees for about 20 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake for another 25 minutes until crust is golden brown and the pie is bubbly. Remove from the oven and allow to cool.
Serve the apple pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or top it with homemade whipped cream, it just doesn’t get any better than that! So delicious!
If you ever travel to South Haven, Michigan you should make a stop at Crane’s. Whether you visit the winery or the apple orchard, you won’t be disappointed.
