Au Gratin Potatoes
This is one of my husband’s favorite side dishes. He is a meat and potatoes guy and has always liked my Au Gratin Potatoes. This recipe is easy to make and turns out perfect every time. Serve these creamy potatoes with steak, fried chicken or shredded pork. They go well with absolutely everything. One of the best side dishes you’ll make for your family!
Potato dishes are one of the most requested recipes in my house. Everyone loves a creamy, crunchy potato dish with their favorite steak or chicken for a meal. These Au Gratin Potatoes have become a staple in our home. Simple ingredients always make the best side dishes.
Making a rue, a combination of flour and butter, is the base for creating a cheesy, cream sauce to pour over the potatoes. Don’t rush this process, as it takes time to do it correctly. And that makes these Au Gratin Potatoes cheesy and delicious while they bubble and bake in the oven.
Au Gratin Potatoes
What’s needed?
- 5 medium russet potatoes, sliced
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 3 cups milk
- 4 ounces sharp cheddar cheese, (shredded by hand)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- chopped chives for garnish, optional
How to make Au Gratin Potatoes?
- Heat the oven to 350 degrees. Peel and slice the potatoes and the onion.
- Spray a baking dish with cooking spray and layer the potatoes with the sliced onions. Add salt and black pepper.
- In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the flour and cook for 1 minute while stirring. Slowly add the milk while stirring constantly. Add the shredded cheese to the milk mixture and stir the sauce for about 5 minutes. The cheese will melt and the sauce will thicken. Add salt and pepper to taste. Pour the cheese sauce over the potatoes in the baking dish.

The potatoes will be golden brown and bubbly when done. This dish pairs well with any protein. I chose to serve Au Gratin Potatoes with pork chops and buttered corn…it makes a tasty, satisfying meal!
Can I use this classic cheese sauce to make Macaroni-n-Cheese?
You can also use the same recipe for cheese sauce to make the best Baked Macaroni and Cheese. Simply put cooked (al dente) pasta of your choice in a baking dish and pour the cheese sauce over the pasta. Sprinkle some seasoned bread crumbs on top and bake it for 35 minutes at 350 degrees. You will never eat macaroni and cheese out of a box again!
