What can I do with broccoli stems?
Don’t throw them away! The broccoli stems have great flavor and can be used in a variety of other dishes. Here are a few suggestions:
- You can chop them to the same size as your florets and add them to the salad. They are crunchy and delicious, not to mention full of vitamins and nutrients.
- Peel and chop the stems. Blanch for one minute in boiling water. Drain and place them in a plastic bag. Place the bag in the freezer. Use the broccoli stems in soups, like Cheesy Broccoli Soup, or add them to stews and casseroles. Anything that calls for peas or green beans, you can easily use broccoli stems instead.
- If used raw, you can add them to salads or breakfast dishes, like an omelet. Simply saute with a little bit of olive oil and add them to the middle of an omelet or quiche with some shredded cheese. Check out this recipe for Cheesy Broccoli and Bacon Quiche. So, so good!

- Try adding tiny cubes of ham instead of bacon. It provides that salty flavor that we so often crave in the summer.
- We like this summer salad with sunflower seeds. It gives the salad great crunch and a nutty flavor.
- Pasta is one of our favorite additions to this crunchy salad, it makes the salad more substantial and filling.
