Crispy Smashed Potatoes

Published on January 2, 2025 by Raveaboutfood

When we are hungry for meat and potatoes, this is our go-to side dish! Crispy Smashed Potatoes are crunchy, salty and satisfying. You’ll want to eat them with tender prime rib, hearty meatloaf, or a juicy cheeseburger. They are a great alternative to french fries, just as crispy and flavorful but with fewer calories. Bake some up today and watch them disappear!

Crispy Smashed Potatoes

Small yellow potatoes are used for this recipe. And the process is so simple, just wash them and place on a sheet pan. Then season and bake them. Now for the fun part, SMASH them and broil. They are soft and buttery on the inside, crisp and crunchy on the outside. Crispy Smashed Potatoes are a perfect example of that classic pairing of ‘meat and potatoes’. This really is one of the best side dishes to make with beef.

And there’s no guilt about eating fried food, as these crispy rounds are baked in the oven. Lightly spray them before baking with cooking spray or drizzle them with olive oil. Once baked, smash them and broil to achieve that crunchy texture. Why eat fried potatoes when there is a delicious option that is made in the oven. Tasty and better for you, that’s a Win,Win!

Tips for making Smashed Potatoes:

  • Usually potatoes are less expensive when you buy them in larger quantities and the potatoes are a bit larger in size. No worries, simply cut your potatoes before baking. They can be cut in half or quarters and baked. They may not be round, but they will still be crispy and delicious.
  • Use a variety of seasonings on the potatoes. I’ve used garlic salt, thyme, paprika, black pepper, or Everything Bagel Seasoning. It just depends on what I’m serving with the potatoes and what I have on hand. Don’t be afraid to experiment with your favorite spices, herbs or even some grated Parmesan sprinkled over the potatoes after baking. And remember, potatoes love salt, so don’t be shy with the salt.
  • And if you’re like me, you’re already thinking about what to use as a dip for these crispy potatoes. You can, of course, go with the classic choice— ketchup. You can never go wrong with ketchup, it’s a favorite, for sure. But there are some other delicious choices you may want to consider. We like sour cream and fresh chopped chives, melted cheddar or Velveeta cheese, Ranch dip, or an all-purpose mixture of ketchup and mayonnaise. Share your favorite condiments in the comments below!
