Homemade Cinnamon Applesauce

Published on September 12, 2017 by Raveaboutfood

Apple picking season is HERE! Gala, Honeycrisp, and Golden Delicious are some of my family’s favorite varieties. Recently, my son and I picked apples and made Homemade Cinnamon Applesauce. It is easy to make and tastes so wonderful, like eating a fresh apple off the tree. I usually make enough to put some in the freezer for colder months, too.

There’s nothing quite so comforting in the fall as making this delicious Homemade Cinnamon Applesauce. And it’s best to make a large batch so you can put most of it in canning jars in the refrigerator or pack it in plastic bags in the freezer to enjoy throughout winter and spring.

It is important to start with sweet, ripe apples. Make sure to pick a variety that will cook down and dissolve easily. Golden Delicious, Fuji and McIntosh apples are the best for making applesauce because they are soft and super flavorful.

How to freeze applesauce?

  • Allow the Homemade Cinnamon Applesauce to cool completely.
  • Using a one cup measuring cup, scoop applesauce into quart-size freezer bags. I put 3 cups of applesauce in each bag and seal it tightly. This will give you 6 servings. One half cup is one serving, so if you want 4 servings, put 2 cups in each bag. Do not overfill the bags.
  • Stack them flat in the freezer for easy storage. Applesauce will last up to 3 months in the freezer. Make sure to write the # of cups and the date on each freezer bag.
  • To make this process easier, I use a freezer bag stand when packing my freezer bags with applesauce. It is a convenient tool that I use often when freezing fruits and vegetables. I purchased it online from Passionate Penny Pincher.

You can serve the applesauce warm as a side dish to a hearty meal or allow it to cool and spoon it into freezer bags for freezing and serving later.

Homemade Cinnamon Applesauce is great for breakfast over oatmeal, yummy for lunch with yogurt, delicious for dinner with chicken or pork, and awesome for dessert over vanilla ice cream. Serve it however you like it and be sure to give this recipe a try. Homemade is always best!
