Philly Cheesesteak with Peppers

Philly Cheesesteak with Peppers builds on a traditional Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich, but adds yellow bell peppers to the already delicious combination of shaved beef, onions and provolone cheese. The yellow peppers add crunch and even more sweetness to the sandwich. With or without peppers, these sandwiches get gobbled up in no time.

Thinly sliced ribeye steak, or shaved beef, can be found in the meat section in many grocery stores or you can ask the butcher to shave it very thin at the fresh meat counter. I always grab a package of shaved beef to put in the freezer for making a quick and easy meal. There are so many ways to prepare it, but one of the best is putting it together with onions, peppers and melted cheese on a good-quality bun and serving it as a sandwich. It is juicy and flavorful every time.

When cooking the meat, make sure you don’t OVERCOOK it. Cooking it too long will make the beef tough and chewy. It truly only takes a few minutes to brown the beef. I like to keep moving it around the pan and actually use two forks to shred the beef as it cooks. This results in a tender, cheesy, flavorful sandwich in just a few minutes.

Philly Cheesesteak with Peppers

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound package of shaved beef (ribeye steak sliced very thin)
  • 1 medium onion, sliced thin
  • 1 large yellow bell pepper, sliced
  • 4 thick slices of provolone cheese
  • 2 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 4 Brioche buns
  • Season with: salt, black pepper, garlic powder, paprika OR use your favorite steak seasoning.

How to make Philly Cheesesteak with Peppers?

  • Heat a non-stick skillet to medium heat. Add the unsalted butter.
  • Slice the yellow pepper and onion into thin strips. Add them to the pan. Add salt and black pepper. Cook for about 6-8 minutes to soften.
  • Add the shaved beef, garlic powder, and paprika to the skillet. Move it around the skillet by turning it until it browns evenly, cooking for 4-6 minutes. This can also be done on a griddle.
  • Turn off the heat and add slices of provolone on top of the beef in the skillet. Cover with a lid for one minute.
  • Place beef, onions, peppers and melted cheese on buns and serve immediately. Makes 4 sandwiches.

Selecting a good quality bun or roll for the sandwich is SO important! Pick something that will absorb the juices from the meat without getting too soggy and falling apart. The bun is what holds all the delicious elements of the sandwich together, so don’t skimp on the bread! A hoagie, brioche bun, or a crusty Italian sub bun are all good choices.
