5 Types of Cabbage and How to Use Them?
There are over 400 types of cabbage grown throughout the world. Here are five of the most common types of cabbage and how to use them:
- GREEN CABBAGE– This is the most common cabbage and is typically used in making Creamy Coleslaw, a delicious summer salad. I also use it to make Stuffed Cabbage Rolls, and in this recipe for Pork Chops and Cabbage with Bacon. It is a dense, heavy cabbage with tightly packed leaves. Green cabbage is very affordable.
- SAVOY CABBAGE– This cabbage is recognizable by its wrinkled, ruffly leaves. It is lighter in weight than green cabbage and darker green in color. It is used often in Asian dishes, including stir fry and egg rolls. See Air Fryer Egg Rolls for a recipe with savoy cabbage.
- RED CABBAGE– This cabbage is similar in texture to green cabbage, sturdy and hearty, but is bright purple in color. It is mostly used for slicing and adding to salads. It can also be cooked, as you would green cabbage.
- BOK CHOY– A delicious smaller cabbage used in stir fry dishes, it is white at the base with longer stalks and tender, dark green leaves. Bok Choy is commonly used in stir fry recipes, like this one for Teriyaki Chicken and Green Beans with Fried Rice.
- BRUSSELS SPROUTS- These tiny, individual cabbages are earthy and taste best when roasted or added to hot dishes. Brussels sprouts can also be shaved and added to salads in place of kale and green cabbage. I use them in stews, like Beef and Brussels Sprouts Stew. They are also delicious when roasted in the oven, like in this recipe for Sheet Pan Brussels Sprouts with Bacon.
