Smothered Chicken
Why haven’t I made this recipe before? Smothered Chicken is easy to prepare and so creamy and delicious. I made it in the slow-cooker, but it could easily be done on the stovetop. Chicken, bacon, onions, and a bit of cream cheese added at the end is key to making this dish a creamy and flavorful. Serve it over egg noodles or with Pierogi like I did. Hungry yet?
This Slow-Cooker Smothered Chicken has the most amazing gravy. You begin with bacon, onions, and chicken stock, then cook it over the chicken on low in the slow-cooker to create a savory gravy that is incredible. It is really hard to beat.
Smothered Chicken Recipe
What’s needed?
- 6-8 chicken legs (or thighs)
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 large onions, halved and sliced
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1- 3 ounce package real bacon crumbles (or 6 slices of bacon, cut into 1/2 pieces and cooked until crisp, drained)
- 1/3 cup flour
- 2 cups chicken stock
- 4 ounces of cream cheese, softened
- 1/3 cup milk
- parsley for garnish, if desired
How to make Smothered Chicken?
- Place the chicken legs in the Crockpot and sprinkle with garlic powder.
- In a skillet over medium heat, add the butter and onions and saute for 10-12 minutes. The onions will cook down and become soft.
- Add the pepper, bacon and flour to the pan and stir.
- Pour in the chicken stock, stir and allow it to cook until the mixture is thick and blended well.
- Pour the onion gravy over the chicken in the slow-cooker. Cover and cook on high for 3 hours.
- Remove the chicken from the slow-cooker, cover and set aside until ready to serve.
- Add the cream cheese and milk to the slow-cooker and stir to combine. Cook for another 15 minutes.
Pour the sauce over the chicken and serve with egg noodles or your favorite side dish. I served the Smothered Chicken with Pierogi from a local fresh food market. My family loved this meal. Nothing better to warm you up on a chilly day. Remember to leave me a comment when you try this recipe.
